Frequently Asked Questions
Everything Gulf families ask before booking Northern Russia
Entry conditions depend on citizenship, passport type, travel purpose and dates. Gulf visitors do not all need the same documents. Start with our visa guide at almas-russia.com/en/visa-info. Before buying tickets, check the rules that apply to you using the official sources linked there.
First check whether an e-visa is appropriate for your passport and travel purpose. Current application windows, processing times and fees are listed on the official portal linked in our guide at almas-russia.com/en/visa-info. Allow time for preparation and possible corrections; we cannot guarantee approval timing.
A unified e-visa requires no invitation or hotel confirmation. Ordinary visas have a different checklist. We first review the document checklist for your situation using an official source, then discuss what help we can provide. We do not promise to issue an invitation or assume every application requires one. Start with almas-russia.com/en/visa-info.
The permitted stay depends on your citizenship and basis of entry. Visa validity and the allowed length of stay may differ. Check the rule for your passport with an official source before choosing dates; links are collected at almas-russia.com/en/visa-info. We then plan the program around your dates.
St. Petersburg and Northwestern Russia are generally very safe for families: low street crime in tourist areas, helpful locals, and clear private transfers. We avoid crowded coach groups, use vetted drivers, and share honest area guidance — the same care we'd give our own relatives visiting from the Gulf.
We discuss your requirements before booking and ask kitchens about ingredients, meat sourcing and preparation. Options vary by region, and not every restaurant or hotel is halal-certified. If certification is essential to you, we check available documentation separately. Your host's presence does not replace certification. We agree the proposed menu and any limitations with you in advance.
This can happen, particularly on remote routes in Karelia and the Arctic. We discuss fish or vegetarian dishes, checking ingredients and preparation with the kitchen, or a packed meal you approve. These alternatives are not automatically certified halal. If they do not meet your requirements, we discuss a different meal stop or route before booking.
Prayer pauses are built into the daily schedule — not squeezed in if time allows. We provide a prayer mat and qibla direction in the minivan and hotel room on request. Your host adjusts timing around museum hours and travel legs.
Tell us whether an entirely alcohol-free venue is essential. We ask about alcohol service and its use in cooking, then explain the available choices before booking. A separate table does not make the whole restaurant alcohol-free. If the available setting does not suit you, we discuss another meal arrangement.
Yes. Tell us your dates, group size and interests: we can discuss different visits, more rest time or shorter travel days. Changes depend on opening times, tickets and transport. We confirm any effect on the programme and price before booking.
Tell your guide. We can shorten a walk, take a break or return to the hotel where the day's arrangements allow. If a change needs new tickets or transport, we explain the options and any cost before arranging it.
Yes, on request and subject to availability. We also arrange women-only spa or banya sessions where offered. Tell us in your first WhatsApp message so we assign the right host from the start.
We cap private groups at 8 guests. Most trips are 2–6 — one family or friends travelling together. We never combine unrelated travellers on the same minivan.
We discuss alternatives for weather-dependent days before the trip. The final choice depends on local conditions, opening times and availability. If a boat cannot sail, we look at a land programme; another water route may also be affected. Your coordinator explains any changes to the programme and price before confirming them.
St. Petersburg & Northwest (typical):
Jan–Mar: −8…−15°C, snow, short daylight — winter magic, aurora trips
Apr–May: 5…15°C, melting snow, spring blooms
Jun–Aug: 18…25°C, White Nights (almost 24h light in June), ideal for families escaping Gulf heat
Sep–Oct: 8…15°C, golden autumn, fewer crowds
Nov–Dec: −2…−10°C, first snow, festive atmosphere
Karelia & Arctic are cooler — we send a seasonal packing note with your itinerary.
Summer: light layers, rain jacket, comfortable walking shoes, modest clothing for mosques/churches. Winter: thermal layers, waterproof boots, gloves, hat — we send a detailed seasonal list 1–2 weeks before travel. Prayer mat optional — we provide on request.
We help on arrival: eSIM setup at the airport or a local SIM with data for your stay. Your host shares the coordinator WhatsApp line on day one — you are never offline for urgent questions.
Local currency is the Russian ruble (RUB). Foreign Visa and Mastercard cards do not work in Russia — you cannot pay with them at hotels, restaurants, or shops. Bring USD or EUR in cash and exchange for rubles at a bank or licensed exchange office after arrival; keep cash rubles for small purchases. UnionPay cards (if your bank issues them) are sometimes accepted — check before you fly. We quote tours in USD/SAR/AED with transparent conversion; tour payment is by bank transfer from abroad — no hidden FX markup.
30% after you approve the final itinerary — not before. We send the full program and price breakdown first; you confirm dates and inclusions, then pay the deposit to hold hotels and guides.
Full refund if you cancel 30+ days before arrival. 50% refund for cancellations 14–29 days before. Within 14 days, we refund what suppliers return minus bank fees — we always show the breakdown honestly.
Bank transfer (USD, EUR, AED, SAR), secure card payment (Visa/Mastercard), and coordination via WhatsApp for invoice details. Installment balance due 30 days before travel unless agreed otherwise.
